Play and Creative Arts Therapy

The therapy sessions are based around a toolkit consisting of a wide range of play resources and art media to explore, alongside invitations to engage in more directive activities. The therapist allows the child permission to lead the play to express him or herself, as they need to, without judgement or having to provide a narrative. The therapist sensitively mirrors their play, wonders, and reflects their words, when appropriate, to help them internalise and make sense of their process.

Holding Little Acorns offers individually tailored packages for a child/ young person and their unique needs, delivered in blocks of 12 sessions. Individual sessions last 45 minutes. They take place once a week, on the same day, at the same time, and in the same confidential therapeutic space. This may be at a child’s educational setting or privately at The Redland Practice therapy rooms. Consistency is key to the therapy process.

Play and Creative Arts Therapy supports children and young people with a range of conditions such as: experienced trauma, abuse, attachment difficulties, adopted, fostered (or in the process of being), bereavement and loss, parental separation/ divorce, anxiety, low self-esteem, low mood, phobias, social communication difficulties, identity issues, emotional regulation, compulsive behaviours, withdrawn behaviours and illnesses. Holding Little Acorns welcomes any children or young people who require our support whatever their difficulties and needs. Please contact us to talk further.

Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP)

PCAP is based on the latest attachment research and is an empowering early intervention for parents/carers with children aged 3-16. It is a play-based approach aimed at improving the parent-child relationship and attachment. When the parent-child relationship is working, helpful child behaviour generally follows and family life becomes more manageable and enjoyable.

This is a 10-step programme where the therapist works with the parent/carer on an individual or group basis with up to 6 adults. This will take place once a week, on the same day at the same time, and in the same confidential therapy space. The support usually takes 10-12 sessions although some families may require additional support.

The therapist will sensitively work with the parents/carers to model and share the main skills of PCAP through experiential sessions. Once parents/carers feel confident in the skills, they will begin a short weekly “You and Me” activity time at home with their child. Over time, these skills can be transferred to other areas of home life and parenting.

This intervention is ideal for parents/carers who are keen to develop existing bonds with their child or parents/carers of children with attachment difficulties. There is an option that this support can be delivered alongside a Play and Creative Arts Therapy intervention for your child.

Therapeutic Life Story Work

This is a therapeutic tool to support children and young people to explore and process early trauma and life experiences so that they are able to form secure attachments with their adopted parents and foster carers. The model is based on support for the child and adoptive parents/carers to work alongside each other using a therapeutic approach and creative arts. This will enable the children to accept and process their difficult and complex feelings. It uses a gentle and nurturing approach to explore a child’s history through a therapeutic lens.

Therapeutic Life Story Work sessions will be planned on an individual basis so please get in touch with us to discuss a suitable package of support.
